Strike vote set for Tuesday at MBS radio in Saint John
Written by Wayne Harrett

(05/10/12) Members of the Canadian Media Guild at three MBS radio stations in Saint John will vote next Tuesday to give their bargaining committee a strike mandate. The employees, which include on-air hosts as well as production and administrative staff at Big John FM, K-100 and CFBC, joined the CMG a year ago.

The Guild has been attempting to negotiate a first collective agreement for eight months. The parties have been in conciliation since February. Yesterday, the management team left the table without explaining the proposals it had given to the conciliator. Management also advised the conciliator they would not attend the third scheduled day of talks this week.
The annual salary scales the company tabled before abandoning the talks start at $22,041, reaching a maximum of $28,542 by the end of 2015. The absurd proposal would amount to a $6-8,000 pay cut for existing staff. The salary offer is offensive considering MBS owner and Nova Scotia lawyer Robert Pace was paid more than $290,000 in 2010 for sitting on a single corporate board, Canadian National Railways. Average annual salary in New Brunswick was more than $39,000 in 2009.

The Guild is advising members to restrict their work to regular duties performed during regular work hours. This does not include non-paid events. The company has a habit of insisting members take part in so-called "station promotional events" including soap box derbies, sandcastle contests, pond hockey, etc., without pay.

We are seeking a fair deal, one that provides a measure of job security, realistic wages and some semblance of respect. We remain prepared to engage in real, good faith bargaining. The Guild committee tabled a comprehensive offer today. Unfortunately, the employer was not present to accept it and it will be forwarded by the conciliator. The parties will be in a legal strike/lockout position as of June 1.

Well Known Maritime Broadcaster, Dave Wright Passed Away
Written by Wayne Harrett

A broadcast legend has died.

After a long battle with cancer, former ATV and 92/CJCH radio host Dave Wright died Thursday (02/12/11), at the age of 82.

1956 was the year Dave joined the CBC and then went on to work at various stations, including 1050 CHUM.

He hosted the popular, call in show, The Hotline on CJCH, did the noon news…….but then he moved over to ATV in 1976, where he started the 30 minutes news and public affairs program, “Dave Wrights Notebook”, leading into the 6:00 ATV Evening News.

In 1982, Dave Weight brought a first to television, where he didn’t sit behind a news desk …..he walked around the newsroom, talking to reporters on stories. That program became what it is to this date….Live At Five, which he hosted for four years.

As current news anchor, Steve Murphy was quoted in a recent article…..” His style was unique, his programming choices were unique, and they were way ahead of their time.”

He went live from many areas of the globe, reporting on major news stories, including the marriage of Princess Diane and Prince Charles, the tearing down of the Berlin Wall and many more! That in itself was ahead of its time, before other stations started jumping on board.

Dave left for Boston to anchor the CBS affiliate evening newscasts, but later returned to ATV. He suffered a heart attack in 1987, which required a quadruple bypass. He wanted his procedure to be recorded as documentary, which earned him an Emmy Award nomination.

There are many more stories that can be told of Dave Wright……he has done to broadcasting at the time, that couldn’t even been imagine…..but his idea has caught on to many media outlets.

We raised the Golden Mike to a true friend of the airwaves…….”And so it’s Been Recorded”…..Rest In Peace Dave
